  • Well it’s obvious the one on the right is Aretha Franklin, but who is the one on the left supposed to be? haha

Olivia, it’s Obama. The only time he has a pair is when he wears that costume. ;)

  • Blackface? Didn’t we all learn from Ted Danson’s mistake?

  • Db: from what I understand (limited mind you) blackface is not quite such a taboo subject over in Europe. Probably comes from not having such a cultural ‘thing’ with slavery or segregation.
Either way, nobody seems to get quite so upset when we (as a society) wears those giant inflatable sumo suits which could be seen as just as disparaging.

  • Was in Amsterdam during Christmas and they have this black sambo character that hangs out with the Father Christmas character or Santa clause. Very shocking to black Americans when they see this because of our history, but they are surprised and a bit embarrassed by our reactions as they really do not understand the insult. The Dutch have actually begun a movement to get rid of this minstrel slave character, even though he’s a very beloved part of the holiday, for Dutch children especially.

As rough and ugly as our country can be, it shows you how utterly advanced to the rest of the world, on the issue of race, our combined struggle has made us.
